The Beginning

By January 1, 2015Commentary

It’s a new year and a new beginning! Today we kick off the Bible reading plan with our Old Testament and New Testament tracks in Genesis and John.  Both of which appropriately start with “In the beginning.”

Over the next couple of days we read about beginning of the world and the Fall of Man in the Old Testament track. I’m always in awe of the Creation story. It really was just the beginning.

Creation didn’t end after the sixth day, it continues today.

The universe is constantly expanding, new stars are born, mankind multiplies, and plants keep producing oxygen for us. It’s as if each day God was hitting a start button that set the world and everything in it in motion. Just as he breathed life into Adam thousands of years ago, he breathes life into us every day.

The New Testament track starts with the beginning of Jesus’ ministry: his baptism, temptation, and the calling of the first disciples. Those first fourteen verses of John might just be the most amazing opening of any book of the Bible. It’s filled with epic verses like

“In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it,”

and I can’t help but imagine Cate Blanchett reading it with the Lord of the Rings soundtrack in the background.

So here we go. As you spend time with Him, our hope is that you know the Word and see His glory revealed each day. God has some incredible things in store for you in 2015. This is just the beginning.
